Little brown bat

Pix of a bat we found in my son's school. After some observation, it was turned loose in our backyard to help thin out the mosquito population.

  1. Those pictures are dare I say, cute? Watch out for rabies, though! I'd be afraid to touch a bat...

  2. Cute is not the word. He was adorable! he made much more noise than I had ever imagined a bat would make, chittering like a cricket while trying to look ferocious. He was extremely soft, including the surface of his wings.

  3. Ha! ok, adorable. :) The bat does actually look like he's smiling in the second picture! I'm surprised to hear that his wings were soft, because bat wings never look that way to me in pictures. So, aside from being noisy, the bat was ok with being picked up? He does actually look pretty comfortable...

  4. Wow, he's ALMOST as cute as Fritz! Maybe if I photoshop a little top hat on him?
I haven't touched any small bats, but got to touch some fruit bats when in Australia once. Imagine larger-than-cat sized bats... pretty freaky, but cool at the same time.

  5. Justine, He was NOT thrilled about being picked up, but adjusted to it quickly when he realized there was no threat. It is my oldest son in the picture holding him...personally I didn't want any part of holding it due to a bad gerbil experience when I was a kid. We let the bat climb to a comfortable spot and get acclimated, then he eventually flew off into the night.

  6. Haha - I don't know why the "bad gerbil experience" comment made me laugh, but it did. I take it you were bitten by a gerbil? The bat looks like he could really sink his teeth into someone in the last picture. Your son must be pretty fearless!

  7. AWWWWWWW! So cute! I sort of want a pet bat now, thanks for that.

Found you via one of your kid's friends after I mentioned that I was into creepy things. He said I'd like what you create. Yeah, pretty much inclined to agree.

I write over at circlecitystyle.blogspot.com and my Etsy store is belladonnagrotto, if you're inclined to check it out. Just got 'er started a couple of weeks ago. See you 'round the intertubes,

    Leah
